The Japanese group specialized in telecommunication and optic fiber wiring for the industrial, domestic and corporate sector. Furukawa entered Colombia through the construction of and optic fiber wiring plant located at the Pacific Free Trade Zone in Palmira. This factory is the first one of its kind in the Andean region and the firm’s third one in South America. The other two sites are in Brazil and Argentina.
The decision to settle in Valle del Cauca was made given the strategic location the department has, which allows import of raw material and export of finished product operations to the Pacific Rim Countries.
The easy access to the inner market was also an important factor to consider when choosing Valle del Cauca, since the company’s main customers are in Bogota, Medelin and other cities of Colombia.
“Valle del Cauca has many positive aspects to ir that explain our presence here, all of which are related to its location: being so close to the port – it is on the pacific area; Furukawa has many sites by the Atlantic, ergo, setting in Valle means to be in a geostrategic region. It is a place where we can see development, good universities and talent. People in Valle del Cauca are warm and open to welcome foreigners. We are a multinational company from Japan with global presence, and we can say we feel at home here in Valle del Cauca”. Foad Shaikhzadeh, C.E.O. for Furukawa – Latin America.
